Measles case - Fairfax and Woodbridge

The VDH is reporting a measles exposure at:

- PM Pediatric Urgent Care, 2690 Prince William Parkway in Woodbridge, on Tuesday, Jan. 13 from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

- Inova Children’s Emergency Department, 3300 Gallows Road in Falls Church, on Thursday, Jan. 15 from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday, Jan. 16 from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.

- Inova Fairfax Hospital Women’s and Children’s Building, Floors 2-10, 3300 Gallows Road in Falls Church, on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 2:30 a.m. to Sunday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m.

If your child was exposed at one of these times and locations, and has not yet had 2 doses of the MMR vaccine, please call or send us a portal message so we can advise you on the next steps.

Happy New Year to our Kidz Docs families!

We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and winter break. As we begin a new year, we know our patients will continue to grow, learn, and thrive, and we look forward to hearing about all they accomplish in the year ahead.

We would like to take a moment to address a few common questions and reminders that come up this time of year:

Influenza

Flu season is here. The influenza vaccine remains one of the best ways to protect children and teens from severe complications of the flu, including hospitalization. It is not too late to receive the flu vaccine. Please call our office or send a portal message to schedule an appointment.

Immunization Schedule

Vaccines have been in the news frequently, and we understand families may have questions. Across the country, we continue to see outbreaks of vaccine-preventable illnesses such as measles and pertussis (whooping cough).

The Kidz Docs follows the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Immunization Schedule, as providing science-based, evidence-driven medical care is central to our mission. Vaccines are safe, effective, and one of the most important tools we have to keep children healthy.

Our vaccine policy remains in place. Patients are expected to follow the AAP schedule, with immunization checkpoints at 2 years, 6 years, and 18 years of age. Patients on a catch-up schedule must have a signed vaccine agreement and schedule documented in their chart.

As pediatricians, it is essential that our office remains a safe environment for all patients, including newborns, children and family members undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, and others who are immunocompromised.

Infection Control

Masks are required for sick patients and accompanying family members. This helps protect our patients, families, and staff. Masking is one part of our broader infection control plan, which also includes surface disinfection, staff vaccination, and nurse triage of symptoms. Thank you for helping us maintain a healthy environment for everyone.

Code of Conduct

Our clinicians and staff work hard to provide compassionate care to all families. Parents and caregivers are expected to treat all employees with respect. Name-calling, slurs, harassment, or threats will result in dismissal from the practice.

Financial Hardship

We recognize that many families continue to experience financial challenges, including job loss, insurance gaps, or other hardships. If you are having difficulty paying your bill, please reach out to our office so we can discuss available options and support.

**All lots of ByHeart Infant formula have been recalled.**

The FDA and CDC are investigating an outbreak of infant botulism cases that may be linked to ByHeart infant formula. ByHeart recalled all their formula products sold nationwide on Tuesday morning. If your family has one of the recalled formula cans at home, stop using the formula and monitor your infant for signs of botulism, including constipation, difficulty feeding, poor head control and trouble swallowing. Winter Vaccine Update (Flu/COVID/RSV)

We are currently scheduling appointments for established patients for seasonal vaccines. Vaccine clinics are held on select afternoons weekends, and days off school. Please send a portal message or call our office to schedule a vaccine clinic appointment. Vaccines may be received during a previously scheduled appointment (such as a well visit or consult appt), a vaccine clinic appointment, or as a nurse visit.

At The Kidz Docs, we currently are scheduling appts for the following, which we have in stock:

- Flu vaccine (GSK influenza vaccine for 6 months and above).

- New this year : Parents and caregivers may receive their flu vaccine at The Kidz Docs for a $50 fee.

- COVID vaccine (Pfizer for 12yrs and older )

- COVID vaccine (Moderna for 6 months-11yrs )

- RSV immunization for all eligible infants (Beyfortus - nirsevimab)

All patients must have an appointment in order to attend a vaccine clinic. We currently have the following vaccine clinics available for scheduling:

The Kidz Docs follows the American Academy of Pediatrics' immunization Schedule .

Influenza (flu) vaccines are recommended for all patients over 6 months of age.

COVID vaccines are recommended for the following patients:

- Children 6mos-2yrs of age.

- Children with risk factors for COVID.

- Children whose parent/guardian would like them to be protected from a COVID infection.

Beyfortus (nirsevimab) is recommended for the following patients:

- All infants under 8 months of age whose mother did not receive the RSV vaccine during pregnancy, and who have not had Beyfortus in a previous season.

- Infants under 8 months whose mother is immunocompromised and may not have mounted an immune response the RSV vaccine.

- Infants under 8 months who have undergone open heart surgery with bypass, regardless of their mother's vaccine status.

- Infants 19 months and under who have an increased risk for RSV, which is defined as infants with chronic lung disease requiring oxygen, immunocompromised infants, infants with complicated cystic fibrosis, or American Indian or Alaskan Native infants.

Individual as well as herd (community) immunity through vaccination benefits us all, and we are committed to providing our families with evidence-based recommendations that keep children safe and healthy.

Summer Check-ups!

Summer is coming! If you are due for well visit this spring or summer, please contact us now to schedule an appointment. Our spring and summer appointments fill quickly.

In order to complete school, camp, or employment forms, we must have seen you for a well visit within the last year. Some insurance companies support a check-up once per calendar year, and some support one per 365 days. Please check your policy to know which guideline your insurance company follows. Please bring all school, camp, and sports forms to your visit, and be sure the patient/parent part is completed. For middle and high school students, their is a new VHSL sports form which is longer than before; we are required to keep a completed form in our records.

In addition to our regular weekday appointments, The Kidz Docs is offering a limited number of Saturday morning visits in May and June for children 2yrs and above. These Saturday morning appointments are available on a first-come first-served basis.

Please call or send a portal message to schedule your child’s yearly check-up or sports physical, and make sure they’re ready for the summer and the coming school year. We look forward to seeing you soon!

NEW OFFICE LOCATION – SEPTEMBER 19th

The Kidz Docs is relocating to our new office space at 675 N Washington, Suite 490. In order to move our office, we will close for appointments on Tuesday, September 17 at 2pm and reopen on Thursday, September 19 at 7:30am.

During regular office hours on Tuesday and Wednesday, our triage staff will be answering phone calls for urgent concerns only. If you need to schedule a well visit or routine follow-up, please send us a portal message or call our office on Monday, Thursday, or Friday that week. Thank you for your understanding.

We are so excited to welcome you into our new space! Free parking for patients, labeled “Retail Parking,” is located in our building and accessible from Wythe St, between Washington St and Saint Asaph St. There is additional free parking accessible from Pendleton St. Take the elevator up to the 4th floor and check in with our front desk!

Travel Services Update

If we are able to provide these services in the future, we will update our website at that time.

For pre-travel vaccines and medications, we recommend patients seek care from their health department or a local travel medicine clinic. When scheduling the appointment, you must clarify if the patient is under 18yrs of age so the clinic can schedule you with the correct provider. Please be aware that these visits are not covered by insurance. In addition, please note that Safeway will not provide full travel care for patients under 18yrs of age.
